The challenge was immense: Design and build a world class home theater with perfect acoustics in an 18th-century heritage home 80-feet away from active train tracks.
With no room in the house for a dedicated theatre, space was created by excavating the garage and building a connecting tunnel to the main residence. Using Paradise Theater from Maui, Hawaii to handle the theater’s acoustical engineering, a floating slab floor was constructed and tuned to combat the resonant frequency of the passing freight trains. The walls were built on the floating slab, and the ceiling was hung from the walls’ top plates. A cantilevered stage was constructed behind the screen to support the substantial loudspeakers at just the right height. Even the dedicated HVAC system was connected by decoupling materials. Every aspect of room was designed with acoustics in mind.
The finishings were meticulously chosen to complement and enhance the technical merits of the room. Walking into the room the massive screen, starcoustic ceiling and impressive millwork immediately grab your attention. Comfortable theatre seating, heart-pounding audio and acoustical wall treatments result in the ultimate immersive theater experience.
To deliver the best sound quality, Station Earth turned to Pro Audio Technology in Southern California for the sound equipment. The final configuration included an 11.4.4-channel Dolby Atmos layout and 18,550 watts of power. The speaker and subwoofer models were selected and positioned strategically in order to “paint” the entire room with uniform acoustic energy.
Quite honestly, I have never heard anything like it. The performance of the Pro Audio Technology system in a perfectly designed room, is as good as it gets. Post-calibration, there wasn’t a single dead spot in the room, which is mind blowing really. This level of performance is only possible because of the incredible engineering of the room and exceptional AV equipment.
